About Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park

Located in southeastern Minnesota near Preston, Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park encompasses rugged limestone bluffs, vast hardwood forests, and the state's longest known cave system, Mystery Cave. The park's geography is defined by the karst landscape, characterized by sinkholes, springs, and underground water channels. Ecologically, the area supports a mixed hardwood forest ecosystem consisting mainly of oak, maple, basswood, and occasional stands of pine, providing habitat for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous songbird species. The park also preserves the Forestville Pioneer Village, a restored 19th-century town that operated as a living history museum until 1996. Recreational opportunities center around guided cave tours, hiking, fishing in nearby creeks, camping, and wildlife viewing. Trails wind through diverse terrain ranging from gentle forest paths to more rugged bluffs overlooking the Root River valley. Mystery Cave tour highlights underground stalactites, stalagmites, and other geological formations inside a limestone cavern system extending nearly 13 miles, the longest cave in Minnesota. The park's combination of outdoor adventure and historical education appeals to families, geology enthusiasts, and history buffs alike. Visitors enjoy seasonal events, including fall foliage hikes and winter cross-country skiing. The park encourages conservation and low-impact recreation to protect its sensitive ecosystems and fragile cave environments.
