About Chilkat State Park

Chilkat State Park is located approximately 5 miles north of Haines, Alaska, along the scenic Chilkat River corridor. Encompassing over 9,000 acres, the park presents a pristine example of Southeast Alaska’s temperate rainforest and rugged river valley ecosystems. Its terrain includes forested riverbanks, wetlands, and steep mountain slopes that provide habitat to a wide range of wildlife including bald eagles, brown bears, black bears, moose, and migratory salmon. Established in 1970, the park is significant for preserving the Chilkat River watershed, which is a vital spawning ground for five species of Pacific salmon, including the prized sockeye and chinook. Visitors to Chilkat State Park can enjoy hiking trails that range from short strolls to more strenuous routes, offering panoramic views of the river and surrounding mountains. The park is also popular for fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching, particularly during the fall eagle migration when hundreds of bald eagles gather in the area to feed on spawning salmon. Chilkat State Park has a rugged, remote feel with limited facilities, making it a destination for those seeking a more backcountry experience near the community of Haines. Despite its wilderness character, the park is accessible via Highway 7 and offers trailheads and a small day-use area. The combination of scenic beauty, abundant wildlife, and seasonal activities makes Chilkat State Park a valued natural area for recreation, education, and conservation in Southeast Alaska.
