About Chain O’ Lakes State Park

Chain O’ Lakes State Park is located in northeastern Illinois along the Fox River, encompassing over 2,700 acres of diverse landscapes centered around a chain of interconnected glacial lakes. The park's waters include seven lakes connected by channels and the Fox River itself, creating one of the largest inland boating areas in the state. Its varied ecosystems consist of wetlands, woodlands, and prairies supporting a wide range of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, waterfowl, muskrats, and a variety of fish species including largemouth bass and panfish. Established in 1945, the park preserves both natural habitats and historical features, including remnants of early canal systems and old mill sites. Outdoor recreation is abundant, with boating and fishing being especially popular due to the extensive waterways. Additionally, the park includes over 15 miles of trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking through forested and prairie terrain. Several picnic areas and campgrounds allow visitors to extend their stay in the tranquil natural setting. The park is well-known for birdwatching, especially during spring and fall migrations, and offers excellent opportunities for paddling and snowmobiling in winter. Visitors appreciate the balance of aquatic and terrestrial environments combined with the park’s accessible location near suburban communities. Chain O’ Lakes State Park serves as a year-round outdoor destination catering to families, anglers, paddlers, and nature enthusiasts.
