About Big Pocono State Park

Big Pocono State Park, located in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, occupies the summit area of Camelback Mountain in the Pocono Mountains. The park covers approximately 1,300 acres characterized by mixed hardwood forests, open meadows, and rocky outcrops. At an elevation of about 1,800 feet, it provides some of the most expansive panoramic views in the region, including vistas of the Delaware Water Gap to the east and the Endless Mountains to the north. The park's centerpiece is its 67-foot observation tower, originally constructed in the 1960s, which allows visitors 360-degree views across three states: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. In all seasons, the park appeals to outdoor enthusiasts with hiking, birdwatching, snow sports, and picnicking opportunities. The park is also adjacent to the larger Camelback Resort, known for skiing and water park facilities, but Big Pocono State Park remains a natural destination focused on more rustic recreation and scenic appreciation. Trails within the park range from easy to moderate, traversing forested terrain and ridge tops. Winter draws visitors for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, offering a quieter experience away from the resort crowds. Spring and fall provide excellent conditions for plant and wildlife observation as well as leaf-peeping. Historically, the area served as a lookout and recreation spot since the early 20th century before becoming state-managed land designed to preserve natural beauty and provide public access. Visitors often enjoy the combination of accessible summit vistas with peaceful natural surroundings, making it a favored spot for photographers, families, and outdoor adventurers seeking scenic but moderate terrain.
