About Afton State Park

Afton State Park is located in Washington County along the scenic St. Croix River valley in southeastern Minnesota. Covering approximately 1,800 acres, the park features a landscape of forested hills, restored prairies, oak savannas, and steep limestone bluffs that rise above the river, providing picturesque views and a variety of habitats. The St. Croix River, a federally designated National Wild and Scenic River, forms the eastern boundary, offering ample opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and wildlife observation. Ecologically, the park supports a mix of deciduous hardwoods, including oak and maple, as well as native prairie grasses and wildflowers. It is home to diverse wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and many songbird species. Originally acquired in the 1960s as part of Minnesota’s initiative to protect the St. Croix waterway corridor, the park opened to the public in 1969 and has since developed well-maintained trails and camping facilities. Visitors enjoy hiking and mountain biking on more than 15 miles of trails that vary in difficulty, exploring the unique bluff topography and river viewpoints. The campground offers modern amenities including walk-in sites near the river and equestrian campsites for horseback riders. In winter, Afton State Park remains popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, providing year-round outdoor adventure. Notable landmarks include the river overlook near Sunrise Point and the interconnected trail system leading down to riverside areas. The park’s combination of natural beauty, outdoor recreation options, and proximity to the Twin Cities metropolitan area make it a well-loved destination for day visits and extended camping stays.
