Clear Fork Gorge State Nature Preserve offers visitors a striking limestone gorge with unique geological formations and rare natural habitats, ideal for hiking and nature study.
Clear Fork Gorge State Nature Preserve is located near Loudonville in Richland County, Ohio. It protects a rugged 40-foot deep limestone gorge carved by Clear Fork Creek, a tributary of the Mohican River. The preserve features a rich assemblage of flora and fauna, including several rare and sensitive plant species adapted to the cool, shaded microclimate of the gorge. The preserve’s forested slopes consist predominantly of mature hardwoods such as sugar maple, beech, and tulip poplar, providing excellent habitat for diverse wildlife including various bird species and small mammals. The gorge walls expose significant limestone and shale layers that reveal the area's geologic history dating back to the Devonian period. Established in 1978, the preserve is managed to maintain its pristine ecological and geological features with minimal human disturbance. Visitors can enjoy a well-maintained trail system that descends into and follows the gorge floor, allowing for close observation of the creek, rock formations, and seasonal wildflowers. The area is also appreciated for photography, birdwatching, and educational field trips due to its distinctive landscape and biodiversity. There are no developed campgrounds inside the preserve, but nearby state parks and forests provide camping opportunities. Its relative seclusion and rugged terrain make it a quieter, less crowded destination for nature enthusiasts seeking scenic views and a peaceful environment. The preserve acts as an important refuge for native plants and animals and offers a glimpse into Ohio’s natural heritage through its geological and biological features.
