About South Arkansas Arboretum

Located in El Dorado, Arkansas, South Arkansas Arboretum is one of the state's few botanical gardens managed by the Arkansas Forestry Commission. The arboretum provides an accessible introduction to the native plants of the West Gulf Coastal Plain, an ecological region rich in hardwood forests, pine stands, and wetlands. Spanning 13 acres, this natural area features paved and natural-surface walking trails, educational signage, and a pavilion that hosts programs and events. Visitors can explore a variety of habitats including mixed hardwoods, pine forests, and native wildflower gardens. The arboretum features hundreds of native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, many labeled to aid in plant identification. This accessible outdoor space serves as both an educational center and a quiet retreat for birdwatching, photography, and light hiking. Established in 1965, the South Arkansas Arboretum plays an important role in conservation and environmental education through its interpretative programs and exhibits. Its compact size and well-maintained paths make it an ideal destination for families, school groups, and casual visitors looking to experience native Arkansas flora without venturing far from town.
