About Sonoita Creek State Natural Area

Sonoita Creek State Natural Area is located in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, within the transition zone between the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts. This protected area preserves one of the few perennial riparian corridors in southeastern Arizona, running along Sonoita Creek from the Red Hills and continuing downstream. The creek supports a rich variety of aquatic life, including native Gila trout and other fish species, while the adjacent woodlands and grasslands provide habitat for numerous birds, mammals, and reptiles. The area's diverse ecology draws birdwatchers seeking species such as the varied bunting and elegant trogon, as well as anglers hoping to catch native fish. Historically, the Sonoita Creek area was used by indigenous peoples for hunting and gathering and later became part of ranching lands before its dedication as a protected natural area. Key recreational opportunities include hiking along the creek, wildlife observation, and photography, with scenic views of the creek and surrounding oak woodlands. The Sonoran landscape features sycamore, cottonwood, and willow trees that thrive near the water, contrasting with the dry uplands. Visitors appreciate Sonoita Creek State Natural Area for its relatively remote, peaceful atmosphere and the chance to experience a rare riparian ecosystem in the region.
