About Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area

Located on the central Oregon coast near Newport, Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area spans a quarter-mile of rugged coastline where powerful ocean waves have sculpted a large, bowl-shaped rock formation. This natural amphitheater was created when collapsing sea caves formed a nearly circular opening that channels intense wave action into a spectacular display of crashing surf and booming water sounds. The area offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness coastal geologic processes up close, with tide pools full of diverse marine life visible at low tide. The surrounding landscape comprises coastal forest, rocky cliffs, and sandy beach areas that attract a mix of seabirds and shore wildlife. Established as a protected area in 1929, Devils Punch Bowl remains a popular spot for sightseeing, photography, whale watching during migration seasons, and exploring the nearby small coves and trails. The site is accessible off Highway 101, featuring a well-developed parking area and viewpoints designed for safe viewing of the punch bowl and ocean. This natural area is particularly popular in spring and fall during gray whale migrations, as well as during stormy winter surf when waves surge into the bowl with dramatic effect. Visitors appreciate the combination of geological wonder, tranquil coastal forest, and educational interpretive signage available on site. While swimming in the punch bowl itself is unsafe due to strong currents, the adjacent beaches provide opportunities for beachcombing and tidepool exploration. Overall, Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area delivers a memorable coastal experience centered on one of Oregon’s most striking oceanic features.
