About Mohican-Memorial State Forest

Mohican-Memorial State Forest spans over 4,000 acres in northeastern Ohio, centered near Loudonville in Ashland County. The forest preserves a large expanse of the Eastern deciduous forest ecosystem, featuring mature hardwoods such as oak, maple, and hickory. The area is defined by the winding Clear Fork Mohican River, which provides vital riparian habitat and excellent fishing opportunities for species like smallmouth bass and trout. Historically, this forest was heavily logged during the late 19th century, but now it is managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for conservation, recreation, and timber production.

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore more than 30 miles of multi-use trails, including the popular Hemlock Loop and Lyons Falls trails, which showcase waterfalls, rocky ridges, and dense forest. Mountain bikers flock to the well-maintained singletrack paths, while anglers enjoy the river’s clean, cool water. The forest also offers developed campgrounds, picnic areas, and a nature center, making it family-friendly. Nearby Mohican State Park and the Mohican River provide additional paddling and hiking options. Wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and various songbirds are commonly observed, highlighting the ecological diversity. The forest's combination of rugged terrain, water features, and well-preserved habitats attracts seasonal visitors looking for a balance of adventure and tranquility in Ohio’s hill country.
