About Litchfield State Forest

Located in the scenic hills of northwestern Connecticut, Litchfield State Forest covers over 10,000 acres of mixed hardwood and coniferous forests, rocky ridges, and tranquil streams. The forest spans parts of Litchfield and Goshen towns and is managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Its varied terrain includes gently rolling hills as well as steeper slopes, providing habitat for deer, black bears, turkeys, and numerous songbird species. Historically, this area was used for timber production and charcoal making before transitioning to protected status. Visitors today enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and primitive camping. The forest features interconnected trails such as the Mattatuck Trail, which winds through dense forest and alongside serene ponds. Notable landmarks include the scenic Bunker Hill overlook and Day Pond State Park, which is adjacent to the forest and offers swimming and fishing. The forest’s network of wildflower-rich meadows and vernal pools is important for amphibians and pollinators. Its proximity to several small towns makes it a popular destination for both day trips and longer outdoor excursions. Litchfield State Forest appeals to a wide range of nature enthusiasts, from casual walkers to more adventurous backpackers looking for quiet, less crowded natural settings.
