About Lackawanna State Forest

Lackawanna State Forest spans over 21,000 acres of woodland in northeastern Pennsylvania, primarily covering areas in Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, hardwood forests, mountain streams, wetlands, and several small lakes. This forest provides important habitat for wildlife including white-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkeys, and various bird species. Historically, the area was logged and cleared for agriculture before being reforested by the state in the 20th century. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling during winter months. The forest is home to numerous sections of the North Endless Trail System and the prominent Lackawanna State Park, which includes Lake Lackawanna, a 198-acre reservoir ideal for boating and fishing. The forest’s terrain includes hemlock groves, mixed hardwoods, and areas recovering from past wildfires and storms, offering varied ecosystems to explore. Historic remnants such as old railroads and logging structures provide additional interest. The forest is popular with families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking less crowded natural settings in Pennsylvania’s northern region. Visitors appreciate the combination of maintained campgrounds, trails, and solitude found in this diverse forest landscape.
