About Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit

Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit spans over 22,000 acres in southeastern Wisconsin, showcasing one of the state’s most prominent glacial features formed by the last Wisconsin glaciation. The landscape is characterized by kettles, moraines, eskers, and kames, creating rolling hills, deep ravines, ponds, and hardwood forests. The forest supports a variety of ecosystems including oak-hickory woodlands, wetlands, and prairie remnants, which in turn provide habitat for diverse flora and fauna such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous songbirds. Established in 1946, this unit serves as a significant preserve for the region’s natural history and provides extensive recreational offerings. Visitors engage in hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, fishing, camping, and wildlife observation. The 26-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail passes through the forest, offering exceptional opportunities to experience its unique glacial geology. Notable sites include the scenic Lapham Peak, which features an observation tower providing panoramic views, and the Nordic ski trails that draw visitors in winter. The forest has well-maintained campgrounds and picnic areas, making it accessible for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Overall, the Northern Unit balances conservation with public access, protecting glacial landscapes while encouraging year-round activities that draw about 500,000 visitors annually.
