About Caledonia State Forest

Caledonia State Forest spans approximately 11,500 acres across Adams and Franklin counties near the southern border of Pennsylvania. Located within the Gettysburg Plateau physiographic province, the forest features steep ridges, rocky outcrops, and deciduous forests composed primarily of oak, hickory, maple, and tulip poplar. The area’s rugged terrain and diverse elevations provide important habitat for black bears, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous songbirds. Caledonia State Forest traces its origins to the early 20th century as part of Pennsylvania’s efforts to conserve timber resources and prevent erosion. Over time, it has become a valuable resource for outdoor recreation, conservation, and wildlife management. Popular activities include hiking along the well-maintained trail system, hunting during regulated seasons, and wildlife watching. The forest contains historic remnants such as old logging roads and fire towers, illustrating its forestry heritage. Scenic overlooks provide expansive views of the surrounding valleys and ridges, enhancing visitor appeal. The forest is managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), which balances recreational use with ecological integrity and sustainable timber harvesting. With its accessible location near small towns and regional highways, Caledonia State Forest attracts outdoor enthusiasts looking for a quiet, natural setting with a variety of activities throughout the year.
