About Buchanan State Forest

Located primarily in southern Pennsylvania’s Fulton and Bedford counties, Buchanan State Forest spans over 18,000 acres of diverse terrain that includes mixed hardwoods, pine plantations, and riparian habitats. The forest’s elevation ranges from about 800 to 2,800 feet, providing a variety of microclimates and supporting diverse wildlife such as white-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkeys, and numerous songbirds. The forest was established in the early 20th century as part of Pennsylvania’s effort to restore timberlands and protect water quality, with much of the land once heavily logged or farmed before reforestation. Today, it features a network of multi-use trails ideal for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. Popular waterways like the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River run through portions of the forest, creating excellent opportunities for trout fishing and paddling. Recreational facilities include several primitive and developed campgrounds, picnic areas, and scenic overlooks offering expansive views of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Province. The forest is managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which focuses on sustainable timber management, recreation, and wildlife conservation. Buchanan State Forest is also valued for its quiet, less-crowded atmosphere compared to larger parks in the region, attracting visitors seeking peaceful nature experiences and outdoor adventure.
