About Lake Red Rock State Park

Lake Red Rock State Park

Lake Red Rock State Park encompasses the expansive Red Rock Reservoir, impounded by the Lake Red Rock Dam on the Des Moines River in south-central Iowa. Covering over 15,000 acres, the park is the largest state park in Iowa and provides a variety of outdoor activities including boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing. The reservoir was constructed in the 1960s primarily for flood control but has since become a major recreational resource. The park features a landscape of rolling prairies, wooded hills, wetlands, and the broad waters of the lake, supporting diverse wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous migratory birds. The park offers multiple campgrounds with both electric and non-electric sites, boat ramps, picnic areas, and over 40 miles of hiking and biking trails. Anglers enjoy fishing for species like crappie, bass, and walleye. The park’s location near the town of Pella and Des Moines metropolitan area makes it a popular destination for day trips and extended stays. Visitors can explore remnants of native prairie and hardwood forests, as well as observe seasonal waterfowl migrations. The park’s scenic overlooks provide panoramic views of the lake and surrounding Iowa countryside. Lake Red Rock State Park is managed to balance recreation with conservation, protecting the integrity of the reservoir ecosystem and surrounding habitats.
