About Parc naturel régional du Verdon

Parc naturel régional du Verdon

Established in 1997, Parc naturel régional du Verdon encompasses over 180,000 hectares of protected land in southeastern France, primarily across the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Var departments. The park's defining geographical feature is the Verdon Gorge (Gorges du Verdon), a spectacular river canyon carved by the Verdon River, often considered one of Europe’s most beautiful river canyons. The park’s varied terrain includes high plateaus, forested hills, scrubland, and riverside habitats, supporting a rich biodiversity including several rare plant species and wildlife such as griffon vultures, golden eagles, and otters.

The history of human settlement within the park dates back centuries, with traditional pastoralism, agriculture, and small villages still characteristic of the area. Outdoor recreation is central to the park’s appeal. Popular activities include extensive hiking on numerous marked trails, rock climbing on the vertical limestone cliffs, kayaking and canoeing in the turquoise waters of the Verdon River, mountain biking on rugged routes, and birdwatching. Several scenic overlooks along the rim provide panoramic views into the gorge and across the surrounding countryside.

Visitor appeal also comes from picturesque villages like Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Castellane, renowned for their historic architecture and artisan culture. The park actively promotes sustainable tourism to protect its natural and cultural heritage while offering educational programs and guided tours. With a combination of dramatic landscapes and diverse activities, Parc naturel régional du Verdon is a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers in southern France.
