Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Santee Cooper Lakes Public Lands encompass the areas surrounding two large man-made reservoirs — Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie — located in central South Carolina. These lakes are part of the Santee Cooper Energy and Navigation Project developed in the 1940s to provide hydroelectric power, flood control, and water supply. Covering thousands of acres, the public lands include forested areas, wetlands, and island habitats providing diverse environments for numerous fish species, migratory birds, and other wildlife. The area is well known for world-class freshwater fishing, especially for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. Visitors can enjoy boating and paddle sports along the expansive lakes' shoreline and navigable channels. Several state parks and wildlife management areas border the lakes, providing hiking trails, campgrounds, and hunting zones. The landscape includes pine and hardwood forests interspersed with marshes, giving habitat for waterfowl and wading birds. Additionally, the Santee Cooper Lakes Public Lands offer scenic drives and opportunities for nature photography. The region supports both casual outdoor enthusiasts and serious anglers, making it a popular destination year-round. Historical sites related to early hydroelectric projects and nearby Native American heritage add cultural interest for visitors. Overall, these public lands provide a multifaceted outdoor recreation experience in a blend of aquatic and forested environments within South Carolina’s coastal plain.
