About Salamonie Lake

Salamonie Lake is a reservoir in eastern Indiana offering a wide range of outdoor activities including boating, fishing, camping, and hiking within a scenic forested setting.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Salamonie Lake is a 2,890-acre reservoir created and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Salamonie River, situated primarily in Wabash and Huntington counties, Indiana. Surrounded by rolling hills and mixed hardwood forest, the lake provides a rich natural habitat for numerous species of fish, birds, and terrestrial wildlife. Its shoreline is dotted with public recreational facilities including campgrounds, boat ramps, picnic areas, and several hiking and mountain biking trails. The lake was completed in 1966 with the primary purpose of flood control but has since developed into a popular destination for locals and visitors seeking outdoor recreation. Visitors can enjoy fishing for species such as largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, as well as water sports like kayaking and jet skiing. In addition to water-based activities, the surrounding areas host trails for mountain biking and hiking amid diverse terrain and wildlife viewing opportunities. Salamonie Lake’s accessible location near small towns like Lagro and Huntington makes it an ideal spot for day trips and extended stays. The combination of forested landscape, managed recreational resources, and the lake itself offers a peaceful outdoor experience year-round. Seasonal changes bring migratory birds, fall foliage, and winter quiet, enhancing the area's appeal. Facilities are maintained to balance visitor use with conservation, providing a safe and enjoyable environment for both casual visitors and outdoor enthusiasts.
