About Pinckney Recreation Area

Pinckney Recreation Area offers over 11,000 acres of forests, lakes, and trails perfect for year-round outdoor adventures including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and camping in southeastern Michigan.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Pinckney Recreation Area is a diverse and expansive outdoor destination located in southeast Michigan's Lower Peninsula, southwest of Ann Arbor. Managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the area covers approximately 11,000 acres of hardwood forests, wetlands, and kettle lakes shaped by glacial activity. The landscape features a mix of rolling hills, clear inland lakes, and wooded terrain that supports a variety of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and many species of songbirds. Created to provide recreational opportunities to residents and visitors, the park has long served as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts seeking both serene and active experiences. Visitors can enjoy extensive multi-use trails, including several miles developed specifically for mountain biking, as well as numerous hiking paths that weave through forested areas and skirt lakeshores. The area boasts several scenic lakes such as Crooked Lake and Dixon Lake, well-known for their fishing opportunities. Popular activities include camping at multiple campgrounds ranging from rustic to more developed sites, paddling on calm waters, and winter sports like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Historic landmarks like the remnants of old Native American trails and early settler routes add cultural interest, while well-maintained facilities and picnic areas enhance visitor comfort. Pinckney Recreation Area appeals to nature lovers and adventure seekers alike with its balance of tranquility, scenic beauty, and recreational variety.
