Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Ortonville State Recreation Area spans over 5,500 acres in Oakland County, Michigan, primarily surrounding the expansive Lower and Upper Bounds Lakes. The landscape is characterized by wooded hills, wetland areas, and a mix of hardwoods and conifers that provide habitat for a wide variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous songbirds. Established in the 1960s, the area was designed to provide accessible outdoor recreation within a short drive of Detroit and Detroit’s northern suburbs. Visitors can enjoy 13 miles of maintained trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing during winter months. The lakes are popular for fishing species such as largemouth bass, bluegill, and northern pike, as well as for non-motorized boating and paddle sports. Campgrounds are available with both rustic and modern amenities, accommodating tent campers and RVs. The region’s history includes use by Native American tribes and later development as recreational land by the state. Ortonville State Recreation Area appeals to families, anglers, trail enthusiasts, and bird watchers looking for a versatile outdoor experience close to urban centers. The terrain offers gentle hills and forest openings that are ideal for casual exploration and nature photography. Several picnic and day-use areas provide scenic views of the lakes, while quiet access points invite fishing and kayaking trips. Overall, it’s a popular destination in Southeast Michigan for year-round outdoor activities and relaxation in a natural setting.
