About Northfield Mountain

Northfield Mountain offers a unique blend of outdoor recreation with expansive trail networks, spectacular scenic overlooks, and a world-class pumped-storage hydroelectric facility, making it a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking, and paddling in western Massachusetts.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located along the Connecticut River in northwestern Massachusetts, Northfield Mountain is a multi-use recreation area operated by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Covering over 3,000 acres, this area includes forested ridges, rocky cliffs, and a diverse wetland ecosystem. Its elevation reaches approximately 920 feet above sea level and provides panoramic views of the surrounding river valley. A key feature of the area is the Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage Facility, one of the largest hydroelectric plants of its type, which influences the topography and water levels around the site. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound, with over 30 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing in winter. The extensive trail system weaves through hardwood forests, offering diverse terrain that ranges from gentle slopes to challenging rocky sections. Kayaking and canoeing are also popular on the adjacent Connecticut River and the reservoir. Visitors can enjoy various overlooks, including the Cliff Walk offering striking vistas of the river and surrounding hills. Wildlife in the area includes deer, red foxes, wild turkeys, and a variety of bird species. The area’s history includes extensive logging and quarrying in the 19th century, prior to its designation as a protected recreation area. Today, Northfield Mountain is valued for its mix of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and its historical significance as a hydroelectric site. It is a favored destination for locals and visitors looking for accessible outdoor experiences close to urban centers in Massachusetts and neighboring states.
