About Lopez Lake Recreation Area

Lopez Lake Recreation Area offers diverse outdoor activities in a man-made reservoir setting, attracting visitors for fishing, hiking, camping, and water sports in the heart of San Luis Obispo County, California.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Lopez Lake Recreation Area is centered around Lopez Reservoir, a 2,700-acre water body created by the Lopez Dam on Arroyo Grande Creek. Located about 12 miles southeast of San Luis Obispo, California, the area serves as both a water supply source and a popular recreation destination. The lake's shoreline stretches approximately 16 miles, bordered by rolling oak woodlands and chaparral hills. The reservoir supports a variety of fish species, such as bass, trout, catfish, and bluegill, making it a favored destination for anglers. Surrounding the lake are multiple campgrounds, picnic areas, and boat launch ramps. Visitors can explore over 20 miles of multi-use trails suited for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, with scenic views of the lake and coastal hills. The area provides opportunities for non-motorized watercraft, paddle sports, and swimming, while motorized boating is regulated to preserve the lake's environment. Established in 1969, the facility is managed by San Luis Obispo County and prioritizes both recreation and environmental conservation. The landscape supports a range of wildlife including deer, bobcats, and numerous bird species. Seasonal wildflower blooms and oak groves contribute to the natural appeal. Visitors often enjoy leisure fishing from the shoreline or fishing piers, as well as exploring the extensive trail system that offers varied terrain and overlooks. With campgrounds equipped for RVs and tents, day-use areas with picnic shelters, and boat rentals available, Lopez Lake Recreation Area is a versatile outdoor destination suitable for families, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a peaceful setting within close proximity to urban centers.
