Straddling the border between Kentucky and Tennessee, Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area encompasses over 170,000 acres of forested land situated between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. This unique geographical region provides an exceptional setting for a wide array of outdoor activities, attracting millions of visitors each year. Habitat for diverse wildlife, the area includes everything from open fields and wooded areas to expansive water bodies. Historically rich, Land Between the Lakes was established in 1963 by President Kennedy as part of a conservation effort. Today, it serves as a living laboratory for environmental education and outdoor recreation. Among its notable attractions are the Elk & Bison Prairie and the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm, which transport visitors back in time to experience life during the 19th century. Land Between the Lakes is renowned for its extensive trail systems that cater to hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. Boating, fishing, and camping are also popular activities, thanks to its proximity to two major lakes and numerous campgrounds scattered throughout the area.
