Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Kerr Lake State Recreation Area encompasses over 50,000 acres, primarily on the North Carolina side of the state line, with part of the lake extending into Virginia. Its main feature is the vast Kerr Lake, also known as Buggs Island Lake, which provides a haven for boating, fishing, and water recreation enthusiasts. The area is rich in natural beauty, with lush forests surrounding the water, offering habitats for diverse wildlife such as bald eagles and white-tailed deer. Established in 1981, the recreation area provides an extensive range of recreational activities, including more than a dozen campgrounds spread around the lake. Visitors can enjoy fishing on what is regarded as one of the best freshwater fishing lakes in the southeastern United States, particularly known for its bass population. Hiking trails, swimming beaches, and picnic areas offer additional attraction points. Enveloped by nature, Kerr Lake State Recreation Area is a favored spot for both relaxation and activity for visitors seeking a connection with the outdoors.
