Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Kalopa State Recreation Area is situated on the northeastern slope of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii. The park spans lush tropical and montane rainforest ecosystems at an elevation of about 2,000 feet, providing a cooler escape from the coastal warmth. Native ohia lehua trees and a variety of ferns define its dense forest landscape. It is home to several rare and endemic plant species. Established primarily for picnicking, nature walks, and camping, the area provides a serene location for both relaxation and outdoor activities. The park's trail system, although not extensive, offers a peaceful experience through its botanical wonders and is especially popular for local families and botanists. The recreation area also holds historical significance, preserving traditional Hawaiian agricultural practices and serving as a reminder of the island's rich cultural legacy.
