The area encompasses mixed conifer forests dominated by Douglas-fir, pine, and madrone trees, with a rich understory supporting local wildlife such as black bears, deer, and numerous bird species. Applegate Lake, formed by the damming of the Applegate River, offers a large reservoir ideal for fishing, watercraft, and swimming. Established in the early 1970s, the park honors Joseph H. Stewart, a former Rogue River Basin supervisor who contributed to regional water conservation. Fishing is a significant draw here, with species including largemouth bass, trout, and kokanee salmon. The campground facilities provide both tent and RV camping, with amenities such as boat ramps and picnic areas enhancing the outdoor experience. The proximity to the Rogue River National Forest and nearby towns adds to the area's accessibility and appeal. This recreation area is popular for mountain biking on forest roads and trails, as well as winter snow sports in colder months. Overall, Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation Area offers a blend of water-centered activities and forest-based exploration set against impressive Cascade foothills scenery.
