About George Washington Management Area

George Washington Management Area is Rhode Island’s largest recreational preserve, offering a broad range of outdoor activities in a diverse forested environment that includes lakes, trails, and campsites.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

George Washington Management Area encompasses over 4,700 acres of forestland located in the towns of Exeter, Hopkinton, and Richmond in southern Rhode Island. This expansive area is managed by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and provides excellent opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, camping, hunting, and wildlife observation. The landscape is characterized by mixed hardwood and conifer forests, several ponds including Hairy Hill and Gardner Ponds, plus numerous trails and rustic campgrounds. Established in 1932, the Management Area conserves an important swath of native forest and wetland habitat, supporting diverse wildlife such as deer, wild turkeys, and numerous songbirds. The area's extensive trail system includes multi-use routes suited for mountain biking and horseback riding as well as designated hiking paths. The undeveloped nature of the site appeals to visitors seeking wilderness experiences close to urban centers like Providence. Notable landmarks include a network of ponds ideal for fishing and paddling, and several historically significant stone structures from early 20th-century CCC projects. Visitors enjoy seasonal hunting and winter snowmobiling, making it a year-round destination. The Management Area’s balance of recreational facilities and natural resources makes it a key outdoor asset for Rhode Island residents and visitors alike.
