Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Chippewa Lake Park, located in Medina County, Ohio, originally opened in 1878 as a family-friendly amusement park situated along the shores of Chippewa Lake. The park grew to become one of the oldest amusement parks in the state, featuring classic attractions such as a wooden roller coaster, Ferris wheel, carousel, and boat rides on the lake. Spanning approximately 50 acres, the park was surrounded by natural woodlands and waterside scenery that made it a popular destination for picnicking, swimming, and outdoor enjoyment throughout much of the 20th century. The park also included amenities such as dance halls, concession stands, and picnic areas, reflecting its role as a cherished local spot for summer outings. However, attendance declined in the late 20th century, and the park permanently closed in 1978. Since then, structure removals and redevelopment plans have changed the landscape, although the area remains of interest for local history enthusiasts and for potential future park development. Though Chippewa Lake Park is no longer operational as an amusement destination, the area around Chippewa Lake still offers opportunities for recreational fishing, hiking trails, and lakeside activities. The site’s history as one of Ohio’s early amusement parks holds cultural significance, and local efforts aim to preserve memories through historic documentation and occasional community events.
