Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Camelback Mountain Recreation Area is located in the heart of the Phoenix metropolitan area in Arizona. The mountain rises to 2,704 feet and features distinctive red sandstone formations resembling a camel’s hump, which gives the mountain its name. This area provides one of the most accessible and iconic natural landmarks within a large desert city. Ecologically, the mountain supports Sonoran Desert flora such as saguaro cactus, creosote bushes, and various desert wildflowers, as well as urban-adapted wildlife including lizards, birds, and small mammals. History traces back to Native American use, with the mountain considered a regional landmark and a place of natural beauty. Today, it attracts a broad spectrum of outdoor enthusiasts looking for hiking, rock climbing, birdwatching, and photography opportunities. The two main trails, Echo Canyon and Cholla Trail, are steep and technical, offering challenging ascents with rewarding views of the Phoenix valley and surrounding desert. Visitors experience exposure to the rugged desert environment and often enjoy sunrise or sunset hikes for cooler temperatures and spectacular lighting. As an urban park, the area is easily accessible and popular year-round but requires caution related to heat in the summer months. The mountain provides both a physical challenge and a scenic retreat within the city, drawing fitness enthusiasts, casual hikers, and tourists alike.
