About Brighton Recreation Area

Brighton Recreation Area is a 4,947-acre state park in Michigan offering a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and camping, set around several lakes and rolling forested hills.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Brighton Recreation Area is located in Livingston County, Michigan, encompassing nearly 5,000 acres of forested lands, wetlands, and seven scenic inland lakes. This park provides a diverse landscape with gently rolling hills, mixed hardwood forests, and abundant water resources, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and outdoor recreation seekers. Originally managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Brighton has evolved into a regional recreation hotspot since its establishment in 1945. Its lakes—such as Crooked Lake and Dollar Lake—offer excellent fishing opportunities for species like bass, bluegill, and northern pike. Numerous well-maintained trails wind throughout the area, catering to hikers, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers, including several looped routes and a section of the popular Iron Belle Trail. The park features two campgrounds with both modern facilities and primitive sites, providing options for family camping as well as backcountry experiences. Wildlife is abundant, including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and many songbird species, supporting good wildlife viewing and photography. Brighton’s proximity to metro Detroit makes it easily accessible for day trips or weekend excursions, and its network of amenities ensures year-round enjoyment, from fishing and boating in summer to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing during winter months. The combination of varied terrain, extensive trail systems, and lakefront recreation makes Brighton Recreation Area a versatile and inviting destination for outdoor lovers of all skill levels.
