Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located in Columbiana County, Ohio, Bennington Lake Recreation Area is part of the larger Weski-Bennington Watershed project designed to provide flood control, water supply, and recreational opportunities. The focal point of the area is Bennington Lake, a 182-acre reservoir surrounded by forested hills and meadows. The Recreation Area spans approximately 1,700 acres and offers visitors access to a mixture of wooded and open terrain, ideal for outdoor recreation. The lake is well-stocked with bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish, making it a popular fishing destination. Visitors can also enjoy boating, canoeing, and kayaking on the calm waters. Hiking trails wind through the area, offering moderate routes that showcase local flora and fauna along with scenic views of the lake and surrounding valleys. The area includes a developed campground with both tent and RV sites, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and boat ramps. Historically, the lake and recreation area were developed in the mid-20th century as part of regional efforts to manage water resources and provide public outdoor space. Today, Bennington Lake Recreation Area appeals to families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a peaceful retreat close to urban centers while offering ample recreational amenities in a wooded lake environment.
