About Oahe Downstream Recreation Area

Oahe Downstream Recreation Area is situated on the Missouri River just downstream from the Oahe Dam in central South Dakota. This recreation area provides visitors with access to the expansive Missouri River reservoir known as Lake Oahe, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the United States. The site features diverse recreational opportunities including fishing for species such as walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass, camping in developed campgrounds, picnicking, boating, and wildlife viewing. The area is characterized by rolling hills, river bluffs, and mixed grassland prairie, supporting local wildlife including white-tailed deer, various waterfowl, and songbirds. Historically, the construction of the Oahe Dam between 1948 and 1962 transformed the region’s landscape, creating the lake that attracts anglers and outdoor enthusiasts from across the region. The recreation area is managed to provide a balance between accessible outdoor leisure and natural habitat preservation. Visitors appreciate the scenic river views, access to trails, and opportunities for launching boats into Lake Oahe.
