About Cachuma Lake Recreation Area

Cachuma Lake Recreation Area is located in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County, California. The area centers around Cachuma Lake, an artificial reservoir created by Bradbury Dam on the Santa Ynez River. Spanning approximately 1,100 acres of water surface and surrounded by over 3,000 acres of open space, the recreation area presents a diversity of outdoor adventure options and scenic landscapes typical of Southern California's Mediterranean climate. The surrounding hills support chaparral and oak woodland ecosystems with abundant native wildlife, including deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of bird species. Established in the 1950s, Cachuma Lake has grown into a regional favorite for fishing—particularly for rainbow trout, largemouth bass, and catfish—and offers year-round opportunities for camping, picnicking, boating, and trail hiking. The lake is managed by the Santa Barbara County Parks Department and offers developed campgrounds with amenities such as tent and RV sites, boat rentals, and visitor services. Trails around the lake range from easy lakeside strolls to moderate hikes that wind through oak groves and ridges with panoramic views of the reservoir and the surrounding valley. The area's proximity to Santa Barbara and Solvang makes it a popular weekend getaway. Notable landmarks include the Bradbury Dam and multiple scenic overlooks providing expansive views of the water and mountains. The Recreation Area’s peaceful environment, combined with abundant recreational facilities, attracts families, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a natural retreat south of the Los Padres National Forest.
