About Gwillim Lake Provincial Park

Gwillim Lake Provincial Park

Gwillim Lake Provincial Park is located in northeastern British Columbia, approximately 90 kilometers east of Chetwynd. The park is centered around Gwillim Lake, a clear, tranquil lake set amidst mixed forest and rugged terrain. The landscape features rolling hills, coastal pine, spruce, and aspen groves, creating habitats for various wildlife including moose, black bear, wolves, and a range of bird species. Established in 1999, the park was created to protect the natural environment surrounding Gwillim Lake while offering visitors a gateway to outdoor recreation in a remote setting. The park's main attractions include well-maintained campgrounds, a boat launch, and several trails for hiking and mountain biking. Fishing is popular in the lake, known for its populations of rainbow trout, char, and kokanee salmon. Winter months bring opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, although the park sees fewer visitors during this season due to its remote location and heavy snowfall. The quietness of the area and the undisturbed forest make it ideal for wildlife viewing and photography. Visitors appreciate the tranquil atmosphere and the chance to experience wilderness outside of heavily developed areas. The park is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding Peace River region and for accessing backcountry adventures. Accessible by a gravel road, Gwillim Lake Provincial Park offers a well-rounded outdoor experience focused on nature appreciation and low-impact recreation.
