About Wekusko Falls Provincial Park

Wekusko Falls Provincial Park is located in northern Manitoba, approximately 230 kilometers east of Thompson. The park centers around the spectacular Wekusko Falls on the Grass River, where the river dramatically narrows and plunges over rocky ledges into a series of cascades. This rugged landscape is part of the boreal forest ecozone, supporting a variety of wildlife including moose, black bears, beavers, and numerous bird species such as bald eagles and osprey. The park is also an important stopover for migratory birds. Historically, the Grass River was part of an important fur trade route connecting Hudson Bay to inland regions, and the area holds cultural significance for local Indigenous peoples. Recreational amenities include well-maintained camping sites, picnic areas, and day-use facilities, making it a popular spot for both families and outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy hiking on several trails that explore the river corridor, offering viewpoints of the falls and the surrounding forests. Fishing is a common activity, targeting northern pike, walleye, and lake trout in the river and nearby lakes. In winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are possible when conditions allow. The park's combination of striking waterfalls, accessible wilderness, and year-round recreational options make it a notable destination in Manitoba's network of protected natural spaces.
