About West Hylebos Wetlands Park

West Hylebos Wetlands Park preserves a critical wetlands ecosystem located in the southern part of King County within Federal Way, Washington. Covering approximately 160 acres, the park features a mix of freshwater wetlands, riparian corridors, and second-growth forests that support diverse native plant and animal species. Historically, the site was part of extensive wet prairies and tidal mudflats connected to Puget Sound before urban development altered much of the landscape. The City of Federal Way acquired and developed the park with the goal of conserving local wetlands while providing outdoor recreation and environmental education opportunities. Visitors can explore a network of boardwalks and dirt trails that skirt wetlands and forest areas, offering excellent wildlife viewing—including various bird species like herons, eagles, and migratory waterfowl—as well as amphibians and small mammals. Educational signage throughout the park highlights the ecological importance of wetlands and ongoing restoration efforts. The park’s accessible design welcomes users of all ages and abilities, making it a popular spot for casual walking, birdwatching, and photography. Seasonal highlights include spring amphibian breeding activity and fall migrations. West Hylebos Wetlands Park also connects to adjacent green spaces such as the Hylebos Creek watershed, enhancing regional habitat connectivity. As an urban nature preserve, it provides an important refuge for local biodiversity and an oasis for residents seeking respite from city life.
