About Hassayampa River Preserve

Hassayampa River Preserve is a 770-acre nature preserve located near Wickenburg, Arizona, along a unique stretch of the Hassayampa River that flows year-round despite the desert climate. This preserve, managed by The Nature Conservancy, protects one of the few remaining perennial river systems in the southwestern United States, nurturing an exceptional riparian habitat in the arid Sonoran Desert. The preserve features cottonwood-willow gallery forests, mesquite bosques, and dense wetland areas that support a diverse array of wildlife. Birdwatchers can spot over 300 bird species including the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher and the elusive Bell’s vireo. Other wildlife includes beaver, javelina, and various reptiles. Historically, the Hassayampa River has been a critical water source for indigenous peoples and settlers in the region. Today, the preserve provides outdoor enthusiasts with several miles of flat, well-maintained trails offering scenic views of the river and wildlife observation opportunities. Interpretive signage and guided tours enhance the visitor experience by explaining the area's ecology and conservation efforts. Its proximity to Phoenix and accessibility make it a popular day destination for hikers, nature photographers, and families seeking a quiet desert river environment. The preserve also plays a vital role in conserving water resources and riparian ecosystems in a region facing increasing development pressures. Visitors come to appreciate the contrast of lush river habitat surrounded by Sonoran Desert landscapes.
