About Tennessee River Gorge Preserve

The Tennessee River Gorge Preserve encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged terrain along a 26-mile stretch of the Tennessee River, primarily in southeastern Tennessee near Chattanooga. The gorge is one of the most significant river gorges east of the Mississippi, protecting steep cliffs, dense hardwood forests, diverse wildlife habitats, and rare plant communities. Its geography includes dramatic bluffs, waterfalls, caves, and the swift flowing Tennessee River carving through the Appalachian foothills. Ecologically, it preserves vital habitats for species such as the endangered green pitcher plant and a variety of migratory birds, reptiles, and rare amphibians. The preserve was established by The Nature Conservancy to prevent development and ensure the landscape remains a sanctuary for native flora and fauna. Visitors can explore a network of trails that vary from easy walks along the river to strenuous hikes up steep ridge lines, offering scenic overlooks of the gorge and river below. Paddlers frequently enjoy close encounters with the river’s swift currents and quiet coves. Key landmarks include Sunset Rock Overlook, Trammel Trace Trail, and historic cultural sites such as old homesteads and Native American artifacts. The preserve’s combination of ecological importance and outdoor recreation appeal draws nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers year-round. It serves as a living classroom for ecological research as well as a peaceful refuge from urban surroundings.
