About Allerton Park and Retreat Center

Located in Monticello, Illinois, Allerton Park and Retreat Center spans over 1,500 acres and features a combination of cultivated gardens, native prairies, forests, and riparian landscapes along the Sangamon River. The park encompasses an eclectic collection of art, architecture, and sculpture integrated into its natural setting, including notable stone terraces, formal gardens, and ruins inspired by European estate designs. Established in the early 20th century by Robert Allerton, a philanthropist and art collector, the park was bequeathed to the University of Illinois in 1946 and now serves as a public garden and retreat center. Visitors can explore over 14 miles of trails that wind through diverse habitats, including native tallgrass prairie and mature hardwood forests, providing excellent opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and peaceful hikes. The Allerton House, a historic mansion on site, holds guided tours during select times of the year and stands as a testament to early landscape design coupled with art collection. Seasonal events such as wildflower walks, winter bird counts, and sculpture exhibitions add to the park’s appeal. The location’s blend of natural and cultural resources creates an engaging environment for education, recreation, and retreat.
