About Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area

Located in North Portland, Oregon, Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area encompasses roughly 2,000 acres of wetlands at the confluence of the Columbia Slough and the Columbia River. It represents one of the largest urban freshwater wetlands in the United States, characterized by a mosaic of marshes, ponds, slough channels, and forested uplands. The wetlands provide critical habitat for a diverse range of wildlife, including herons, beavers, river otters, waterfowl, and numerous migratory birds. Established in 1998, the area is managed by Portland Parks & Recreation in cooperation with local and state agencies to preserve its ecological integrity while providing public access. Visitors can explore several miles of trails through the wetlands, along with boardwalks that allow closer views of the sensitive habitat without disturbance. Canoeing and kayaking are popular activities on the waters of the Columbia Slough, providing a peaceful way to experience the area's abundant wildlife and tranquil scenery. The natural area’s serene environment offers refuge within a metropolitan setting and serves as an important educational resource highlighting wetland ecosystems and urban conservation. The site’s proximity to downtown Portland makes it an accessible destination for both locals and tourists seeking outdoor recreation, birdwatching, or environmental appreciation. Interpretive signage and programs help visitors learn about the wetlands' ecological processes and ongoing restoration efforts. Smith and Bybee Wetlands is a key component of the region’s green infrastructure and a valuable asset for biodiversity, flood control, and water quality improvement.
