About Connecticut Lakes Natural Area

Connecticut Lakes Natural Area is a 25,445-acre protected region located in Coos County, New Hampshire, managed by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. The area comprises the First, Second, and Third Connecticut Lakes, some of the largest natural lakes in the state, and the headwaters of the Connecticut River. Geographically, it is positioned in the northernmost part of New Hampshire, close to the Canadian border, within the northern Appalachian mountain range. The landscape consists of vast boreal forests dominated by spruce and fir trees, expansive wetlands, and rocky shorelines along the lakes. This setting provides critical habitat for a variety of wildlife, including moose, black bear, bald eagle, osprey, and numerous fish species like trout and landlocked salmon. Historically, the lakes and surrounding lands have supported native Abenaki populations and later became a focus for conservation to protect their ecological integrity. Recreational opportunities are exceptional for anglers, paddlers, hunters, campers, and hikers. The area’s network of trails, including the famed 129-Mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail, offers scenic access to the lakes and wilderness experiences. Notable landmarks include the iconic First Connecticut Lake, known for its exceptional fishing, and the scenic views from nearby mountain ridges. Visitors are attracted by the area's remote wilderness character, abundant wildlife, and the chance to experience one of the most northern natural landscapes in the eastern United States.
