About Natura 2000 protected area

Natura 2000 encompasses a network of protected areas across the European Union, dedicated to the conservation of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Natura 2000 is a cornerstone of EU nature & biodiversity policy comprising Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) designated respectively under the Habitats Directive and Birds Directive. Covering over 18% of EU land and a substantial part of its seas, it aims to ensure long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats. The network is not a system of strict nature reserves, where all human activities are excluded. It aims to assure the sustainable management of natural areas and biodiversity, allowing humans to coexist with nature. The areas under Natura 2000 can include forests, wetlands, mountains, grasslands, coastal and marine regions, and urban parks. The initiative is supported by comprehensive scientific evidence, meticulous planning, cooperation with landowners and local communities to balance nature conservation with human activity, traditional land use, agriculture, and urban development.

Hiking in Natura 2000 protected area

Explore the Untamed Beauty of the Natura 2000 Protected Areas: An Adventurer's Guide to EU Hiking

Imagine a land where rolling hills cradle lush meadows, and ancient forests whisper the secrets of the ages. The Natura 2000 network invites explorers like you to bask in the exceptional beauty and biodiversity of Europe’s protected landscapes. These enchanting areas, safeguarded by the European Union, not only serve as havens for wildlife but also present thrilling hiking opportunities that promise both adventure and tranquility.

As you lace your hiking boots and adjust your pack for a journey through these protected regions, prepare to be mesmerized by the dancing sunlight filtering through the leaves overhead, illuminating paths carpeted in soft moss and vibrant wildflowers. The Natura 2000 network encompasses a variety of ecosystems, from rugged coastlines dashed with frothy waves to serene wetlands teeming with life. Whether you're traversing limestone cliffs that loom over sparkling turquoise waters or walking beside meandering rivers, every step you take is a chance to connect with nature on a profound level.

Consider your route carefully, as each path offers a unique experience. For the more seasoned adventurers, trails in mountainous areas can provide exhilarating elevation gains and breathtaking panoramas that will ignite your spirit for exploration. Expect rocky terrains, where your feet will grip sturdy stones, and steep inclines that challenge your endurance while rewarding you with sweeping views of the valleys below. For less experienced hikers, gentle forest trails present opportunities to immerse yourself in the song of rustling leaves and chirping birds without the strain of a rugged ascent.

The essence of hiking through Natura 2000 areas extends beyond the physical; it beckons you to engage all your senses. Breathe deeply, and savor the crisp air infused with the scent of pine and earth. Listen closely as streams gallivant joyfully over pebbles, harmonizing with the soft rustle of grass underfoot. Each sound and scent becomes part of your adventure narrative, drawing you deeper into the embrace of nature. As you navigate diverse terrains, keep an eye out for wildlife—deer gracefully leaping through glades, vibrant birds darting amidst branches, and perhaps even the elusive fox peering curiously at your passing.

Preparation is key for your adventure in these remarkable landscapes. Always bring plenty of water to stay hydrated; a well-filled hydration pack or sturdy water bottle will serve you well. Opt for supportive footwear, designed for comfort and grip, ensuring you can tackle both smooth paths and rugged sections with ease. Layer your clothing to adapt to changing weather conditions; what begins as a cool morning may unfold into a warm afternoon. Remember to pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket, just in case the sky decides to showcase its dramatic flair.

Timing your hike is crucial for not only making the most of your day but also for encountering wildlife in action. Early mornings or late afternoons often present the best opportunities to witness animals awakening or settling down for the night, while the crowds of day visitors lessen. This quieter time allows you to forge a stronger bond with the land, feeling the essence of nature all around you.

Adventurers seeking to experience the magnificent allure of the Natura 2000 protected areas will find their efforts abundantly rewarded, as these trails offer both challenge and tranquility in equal measure. With every footfall, not only are you exploring hidden corners of Europe, but you are also contributing to the preservation of these precious ecosystems. Embrace the journey; let the allure of nature guide you on a path toward discovery while immersing yourself in the beautiful, raw landscapes that await you. Start planning your adventure today, and become part of a legacy that cherishes and protects our world’s natural wonders.
