About Shaker Lakes Park Reserve

Shaker Lakes Park Reserve is a protected natural area located in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, encompassing two glacial kettle lakes—Lower Shaker Lake and Upper Shaker Lake—connected by a picturesque stream corridor. The park covers approximately 341 acres of wetlands, woodlands, and open spaces, providing an important refuge for migratory birds and local wildlife within a heavily urbanized region. Established in the early 20th century to help preserve the unique natural environment and prevent development, the reserve has since been managed by the Cleveland Metroparks system. Its landscape features gently rolling hills, mixed hardwood forests dominated by oak, maple, and beech species, and wetlands that support amphibians, waterfowl, and a variety of native plants. Visitors can enjoy a network of trails totaling about four miles, which wind around the lakes and through shaded groves, making the park a popular destination for walking, jogging, birdwatching, and nature photography. Historical landmarks within the reserve include remnants of the Shaker community’s agricultural past, with interpretive signage highlighting the area's cultural significance. Educational programming and guided nature walks are also offered seasonally. The park is easily accessible from Cleveland’s urban core, making it a valuable green space for city residents and visitors seeking a blend of peaceful scenery and outdoor activity close to home.
