Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Ellwood Mesa Open Space is a protected natural area located along the southern California coast near Goleta, just west of Santa Barbara. The area encompasses coastal bluffs, grasslands, wetlands, and maritime chaparral, providing a vital habitat for numerous native plant and animal species. The geography features rolling mesa terrain leading to steep cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, with a series of trails that wind through the preserve, often showcasing panoramic ocean views and opportunities for birdwatching. Historically, the land was used for oil production and agriculture before being acquired and restored by the City of Goleta and local conservation groups. One of the notable ecological projects within Ellwood Mesa is the restoration of the Goleta Slough wetlands, which supports migratory birds and endangered species like the California least tern and the snowy plover. Recreational opportunities include hiking, wildlife viewing, trail running, and photography, with several trails accessible to all skill levels. The area is appreciated for its relatively easy access, peaceful environments, and the chance to experience multiple coastal ecosystems within a compact space. Key landmarks include the Coal Oil Point Reserve adjacent to the mesa and Lookout Point, which offers sweeping views of the coastline and islands offshore. The preserve is an important open space corridor between urban areas and the ocean, contributing to regional biodiversity and outdoor recreation options for residents and visitors alike.
