About Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve

Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve, located in the western Santa Monica Mountains near the edge of the San Fernando Valley, encompasses over 2,000 acres of protected natural habitat. The preserve features oak woodlands, chaparral, grasslands, and riparian corridors enriched by seasonal streams. Its geography includes gently rolling hills and rugged canyon terrain offering scenic vistas of the surrounding mountains and the San Fernando Valley below. The preserve is an important wildlife habitat supporting species such as bobcats, coyotes, mule deer, and a variety of bird species including red-tailed hawks and great horned owls. Historically, the area was home to the Chumash and Tongva peoples before becoming part of ranch lands and eventually preserved as open space for public enjoyment in 2003. Recreation options are diverse, with over 20 miles of multi-use trails that allow hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use. Many trails lead to panoramic viewpoints, wetlands areas, and the intersection with adjacent parks like Malibu Creek State Park. The preserve is also known for its wildflower displays in spring and birdwatching year-round. Managed by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, it balances public access with conservation goals, providing a natural escape close to urban Los Angeles. Visitors are drawn to its tranquil setting, wildlife sightings, and opportunities for exercise and nature study.
