About Elan Valley Reservoirs and Nature Reserve

The Elan Valley Reservoirs and Nature Reserve is a striking landscape in Mid Wales, offering expansive reservoirs, sweeping valleys, and rich wildlife habitats, popular for outdoor recreation such as hiking, cycling, and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Elan Valley Reservoirs and Nature Reserve is located in the county of Powys in Mid Wales and encompasses a series of large reservoirs constructed between 1893 and 1904 to supply clean water to the city of Birmingham. The area covers expansive moorlands, rolling hills, mature woodlands, and impressive Victorian-era dam architecture, set within a designated nature reserve and conservation area. The five reservoirs—Craig Goch, Pen-y-Garreg, Garreg Ddu, Caban-coch, and Claerwen—are framed by scenic walking and cycling trails that offer access to remote vistas and quiet woodlands. The reserve also protects diverse wildlife including rare birds such as the dipper, red kite, and ospreys that occasionally visit. The reservoir dams themselves are notable feats of engineering, featuring stone construction with arched bridges and Victorian bridges, adding a historical dimension to outdoor exploration. Activities range from easy lakeside strolls and circular hikes to mountain biking on forest paths. Photography and birdwatching are also major draws, with opportunities to spot river otters and other native species. The Elan Valley visitors' center and the surrounding villages provide information and amenities, making this an accessible but still relatively tranquil destination. Due to the area's high conservation value, visitors are encouraged to respect wildlife habitats and stay on marked paths. The combination of natural beauty, historical infrastructure, and outdoor activity options has made Elan Valley a favored spot for families, nature lovers, and history enthusiasts.
