About Kgaswane Mountain Reserve

 

Kgaswane Mountain Reserve is located in the North West province of South Africa, just west of the city of Rustenburg. This protected area spans rugged mountainous terrain with elevations ranging from approximately 1,200 to 1,600 meters. The reserve forms part of the Magaliesberg mountain range and functions both as a biodiversity conservation area and a popular outdoor recreation destination. Ecologically, Kgaswane supports a variety of habitats including grasslands, rocky outcrops, and pockets of indigenous forest. It provides refuge to numerous mammal species such as klipspringer, baboons, vervet monkeys, and over 200 bird species including the black eagle and guinea fowl. Historically, the area has significance from local indigenous cultures and has been preserved to maintain its natural state and cultural heritage. Recreation opportunities focus primarily on hiking with over 20 kilometers of trails ranging in difficulty. The reserve also offers mountain biking on certain routes and fishing in small dams stocked with trout and bass. Visitors are drawn by the panoramic views from various peaks, including the notable Serala Peak, which offers expansive views of the Lowveld and Magaliesberg.
