About Texas City Prairie Preserve

Located near Texas City along the Gulf Coast in southeastern Texas, the Texas City Prairie Preserve spans over 2,800 acres of coastal tallgrass prairie habitat. This preserve protects a shrinking ecosystem that historically extended over much of the Gulf Coastal Plain. The gently rolling prairie supports an array of native grasses, wildflowers, and provides critical habitat for numerous grassland-dependent wildlife species. The preserve is managed by The Nature Conservancy and serves as a key site for ecological research and prairie restoration efforts. Visitors to the preserve can explore a network of unpaved trails that wind through expansive grasslands and seasonal wetlands, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching, photography, and nature study. The area is renowned for sightings of the endangered Attwater’s prairie chicken, a rare grouse that depends on this habitat for survival. Additionally, visitors may encounter white-tailed deer, bobwhite quail, and a variety of migratory songbirds. The preserve provides a glimpse into the natural heritage of coastal Texas before extensive development. Its quiet, open landscape appeals to those seeking solitude and outdoor recreation close to urban centers. Educational programs and guided tours are occasionally offered by The Nature Conservancy to enhance visitor understanding of prairie ecosystems and conservation challenges. The Texas City Prairie Preserve is a vital refuge for native species and a rare opportunity to experience coastal prairie landscapes that have largely disappeared from Texas.
