About Dragon Run Nature Preserve

Dragon Run Nature Preserve encompasses a significant portion of the Dragon Run watershed, a heavily forested swamp area in southeastern Virginia. The preserve protects nearly 11,000 acres of wetland habitat characterized by slow-moving streams, cypress-tupelo swamps, and mixed hardwood forests. This 18-mile long stream corridor and its surrounding wetlands support an exceptional variety of plant and animal species, including several rare and endangered species. The preserve is recognized as one of Virginia’s most important freshwater wetlands and is a critical stopover for migratory birds. Historically, the Dragon Run area remained relatively undeveloped due to its challenging terrain and dense wetlands, helping to preserve its natural state. Recreation here is focused on non-intrusive activities such as canoeing and kayaking along the Dragon Run creek, fishing for species like bass and sunfish, and birdwatching. Trails are limited, but the paddling routes offer peaceful exploration through dense hardwood forests and wetland habitats. Local conservation groups work with state agencies to maintain the area's ecological integrity. Visitors to Dragon Run Nature Preserve can experience tranquil water routes, abundant wildlife including bald eagles and river otters, and a rare glimpse of one of Virginia's last large-scale freshwater wetlands. The preserve appeals particularly to paddlers, naturalists, and anglers seeking remote natural settings.
